Academic Overview

Hiram Bingham offers a broad and balanced curriculum which is based on the Primary Years Programme, Middle Years Programme, and the Diploma Programme of the International Baccalaureate. The curriculum focuses not only on academic excellence but also on the formation and development of skills and attitudes such as communication skills leading to the ability to receive and express ideas effectively, thinking skills which develop the ability to think creatively and critically, the ability to explore and enquire, and a wide range of further skills which are central to developing the maximum level of the students personal and academic potential.

Our leaders

Hiram Bingham is divided into two sections, each with its own Head, but under one Headmaster. The two sections, the Primary School and the Senior School both share a common philosophy based on the International Baccalaureate whilst at the same time reflecting a British International culture. Through having a common philosophy the school ensures educational and academic continuity, articulation and coherence.

Our IB Programmes

Director of Studies, I am proud to share with our school community that in 2003, Hiram Bingham became the first school in Peru to be authorised to offer the continuum of IB programmes:

  • Primary Years Programme (PYP) From Upper Nursery to Grade 5
  • Middle Years Programme (MYP) From Grade 6 to Grade 9
  • Diploma Programme (DP) From Grades 10 and 11.

Likewise, in 2022 our school became the first in Peru to carry out an external evaluation of its three programmes collectively, as a continuum. This was led by international IB professionals who are specialists in the IB programmes. The external evaluations ensure the quality of the implementation of the IB programmes and foster their development in schools.

Some benefits of having the IB continuum of programmes are:

  • The progressive development of thinking, communication, research, self-management and social skills, as well as the attributes of the learning community profile.
  • Teaching approaches based on inquiry, conceptual understanding, collaboration, attention to diversity and evaluation as a tool for learning.
  • Full access to all three programmes for all our students, including the Diploma Programme. The latter, opens access to the most prestigious universities around the world.
  • Students learn to think critically, in a flexible environment, which transcends disciplinary, cultural and national boundaries, through language learning: English, Spanish and French.
  • Students are encouraged to actively participate within and outside the school community, as well as to make learning an experience that transcends their academic studies.
